While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Transportation Costs

The prices of our tours include transfers between attractions by car, minibus or coach, depending on the number of travelers. If you choose to explore our country on your own, outside the planned itinerary, you will either need to use public transportation or rent a car.

According to Budget Your Trip, travelers spend around 79 lei/person for transportation in Romania. The exact amount depends on the number of destination and the means of transport selected. For example, buses are cheaper than taxis, but the downside is that they are very crowded. If you have a list of destinations in mind, we recommend renting a car, as using a taxi can get quite expensive.

Is it safe to visit Romania?

Romania is generally a safe country. Several databases ranks us in favorable positions. For example, the Global Terrorist Database places us on position 138/163 countries, essentially certifying that we did not face any terrorist attacks. Meanwhile, the Global Peace Index, which ranks countries based on militarization, society and security, as well as domestic and interest conflict, places Romania on position 22/163.

Overall, crime rate is at a low level in our country. You can walk safely on our streets, without having to worry about being mugged or assaulted. What we are facing, though, is a high level of corruption. You may even encounter situations where authorities propose a compromise which, they claim, benefits everyone. These solutions are usually stretching the law or are outright illegal and you should always reject them and seek legal justification.

Need to know before your Vacations to Transylvania

  • Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
  • Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
  • See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
  • Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
  • Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.

Driving

During our itineraries, we provide transfers between each destination included. We collect your group from a pre-determined location and we drop you off at the end at the same location or at the airport. If you don’t plan to extend your stay past the planned itinerary, you won’t need to drive yourself or use public transportation. Otherwise, this information might proove very useful to you.

Inside cities, you will encounter heavy traffic. Some drivers will perform illegal maneuvers such as crossing red lights, turning on a continuous line or overtaking multiple cars. As long as you are vigillent and keep your eyes on the road, though, you shouldn’t have a problem. Outside cities, you will drive mostly on National Roads, which pass through a lot of villages. Around these villages, look out for carts and animals on the road.

If your destinations are inside a city and you decide to use public transportation, we have some helpful advice you should consider:

  • Buses, trams or the subway are cheaper options than a taxi, but you have to wait in stations and they are usually very crowded, which means you need to look out for potential pickpockets
  • Taxi rides are more expensive. If you have multiple destinations, we don’t recommend this means of transport as you will end up paying a lot of money. Also, keep in mind that some taxi drivers will attempt to scam you. Two methods they use is either circling you around, which increases the sum on the meter, or attempting to negotiate the fare upfront. In the latter case, they will ask for a sum that’s a lot larger than the ride is worth.

Pickpocketing

Pickpockets are usually active in crowded places, where they can steal your belongings and disappear before you can realize what happened. The best way to prevent this from happening is to always keep your bag or purse within eyesight. Furthermore, we reccommend leaving your most valuable items in the hotel safe when possible.

If someone offers to exchange currency on the street, you should refuse and walk away. These people attempt to scam you. For your safety, you should only exchange money at banks or at dedicated exchange houses.

Laws

Romania laws require you to always carry photo ID. You should always have your ID Card or Passport on you. We recommend carrying copies around rather than originals.

Airports, military sites and other secure locations do not allow people to take photos on their premises.

You should also know that penalties for drug offences in our country are quite drastic. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail.

Travel Insurance

Always get travel insurance before leaving your country. It’s important to protect yourself and your family members in case the unexpected happens during your travels. We do our best to make sure you have an amazing experience, but we can’t predict everything that might happen.

For example, you might require medical services. Your healthcare plan most likely doesn’t apply outside your own country and the costs for these services can get quite high. Furthermore, you will not receive free care or even subsidized costs. In such a case, a good insurer saves you from financial trouble by covering the costs.
