Is it safe to visit Romania?
According to statistics, Romania is a safe country. We rank 138/163 countries on the Global Terrorist Database. This basically certifies that no terrorist attacks have occurred here. Another ranking system – the GPI (Global Peace Index), which analyses militarization, society and security and domestic and interest conflict places us on position 22/163.
You should rest assured that crime rate is relatively low in our country (below European average). However, corruption is at a high level. You might find yourself in situations where authorities propose a ‘mutually beneficial’ solution. If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely isn’t. You should not accept such a solution and insist on legal justification.
Need to know before your Vacations to Transylvania
- Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
- Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
- Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
- See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
- Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
- Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
Driving
Our itineraries include transfers from a designated pick-up point (hotel or airport) to every attraction included. Therefore, if you don’t plan to extend your stay and wander off on your own, you most likely won’t have to drive yourself around.
If you decide to spend a little more time in our country after the itinerary concludes, we have some helpful advice:
- Traffic is generally crowded within cities and you might have trouble finding a free parking spot
- Outside cities, you should watch out for carts and animals on the road
- Public transportation (buses or the subway) is usually very crowded, but it is cheaper than a taxi ride
- Taxi rides are more expensive; we don’t recommend these if you intend to visit multiple attractions in one day, as the fare is going to end up quite high; in this case renting a car would be a better idea
- You may encounter shady taxi drivers who are trying to scam you by circling you around in order to increase the sum on the meter or by negotiating the fare (usually a sum a lot larger than what the ride is worth) in advance
Pickpocketing
Pickpocketing is common in crowded places. Thieves may just snatch your bag or purse and run away with it or they might get creative. Either way, our recommendation is that you leave your valuable belongings in the hotel safe if possible and only carry around the items that you really need. Pickpockets usually operate in crowded places like on a bus or a subway train. They take advantage of the large number of people and they cut your bag open in order to steal your belongings. By the time you realize what happened, they are long gone. This is why you should always keep your belongings within eyesight.
Some people might offer to exchange currency on the street. Do not accept their offers as they are most likely trying to scam you. You should exchange money only at banks or at exchange houses (these offer better rates).
Laws
Romania laws require you to always carry photo ID. You should always have your ID Card or Passport on you. We recommend carrying copies around rather than originals.
Airports, military sites and other secure locations do not allow people to take photos on their premises.
You should also know that penalties for drug offences in our country are quite drastic. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail.
Travel Insurance
Before traveling anywhere, you should always get insurance. While some people do not understand its usefulness, travel insurance can be extremely helpful in case something unexpected happens. For instance, if you require healthcare services in a foreign country, the prices can be quite high and you most likely won’t receive free care or subsidized costs. This is where your travel insurance comes in. The insurer will cover the necessary payments so you can focus on continuing your holiday.
Vacations to Transylvania – Costs
The first thing people want to know about their vacations to Transylvania is how much they cost. Some people have a limited budget and need to decide what tour they will attend based on the amount of money they can spend. Others don’t worry about the budget, but they want to know how much everything costs in order to plan ahead.
Tours have different prices based on their length, inclusions, accommodation types and whether they are regular or tailor made itineraries.
A private tour costs more than a regular edition because it is organized for a single, smaller group. You and your friends / family members will benefit from the same high-quality services we provide for larger groups of people.
When it comes to length, it’s just natural for shorter tours to cost less than the longer itineraries. In a 3-days Short Break we include less highlights than in our Awarded 7-Days tours and you will accommodate at less hotels. Speaking of hotels, for some itineraries we provide the possibility to choose between 3* and 5* accommodation. The price of your tour is adjusted based on your choice.
For a 7-Days tour, the average price is about €1200, while a 3-days Short Break can be booked for around €600-700. Specific prices can be found on each tour page.
Prices for 11-Days Study Trips
Our Study Trips are the longer itineraries we provide. These particular tours include impressive cultural and historical places. They are designed for large groups of students accompanied by a teacher. While the teacher travels free of charge, the prices for the other members are:
- €1790 or €1999 (single rooms) for the ‘Transylvania’s Undying Legend tour
- € 1557 or €1837 (single rooms) for ‘Dracula Tours for Schools’
10-Days Halloween Vacations to Transylvania
Besides the short breaks and the Awarded 7-Days Halloween tour, we also organize a 10-days itinerary departing from Budapest. Travelers will visit the famous Tokaj Winery and Szeged, also known as the Sun City in our neighbors’ country. In Romania, highlights are similar to the ones available in our 7-Days tour.
Book your 10-Days Halloween Tour now for €1790 or €1999 (single rooms).
7-Days Tours in Transylvania
We organize several editions of our 7-Days Itinerary. The regular version departs on a weekly basis between May and October and costs €1159. The ‘Best of Romania’ edition, which includes 4 special dinners, costs €1181. Furthermore, in July, we organize a discounted edition of our 7-Days Vampire Tour. Travelers can enjoy the same itinerary for a special price of only €999.
Meanwhile, the Awarded 7-Days Halloween Tour which includes the best Dracula related highlights complemented by three fun parties costs €1299 or €1419 for single travelers.
3-Days Vacations to Transylvania
Our 3-Days Short Breaks include the most important attractions available during the 7-Days tours. The Vampire edition departs on customer request (for at least 2 travelers) and costs €569 or €666 for single rooms. Meanwhile, the Halloween short break departs from Cluj-Napoca or Bucharest, includes both our parties – in Sighisoara Citadel and at Bran Castle – and can be booked for €599 or €666.
2-Days Tours in Transylvania
On Halloween, we organize 2-Days itineraries centered around our parties in Sighisoara Citadel and at Dracula’s Castle.
The 2-Days Tour including our Halloween Party in Sighisoara Citadel departs from Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Brasov or Bucharest and includes transfer to Sighisoara, accommodation, two meals (festive dinner and breakfast) and access to our party, all for €439 or €479 for single rooms.
If you want to book the same itinerary focusing on our Halloween Party at Bran Castle, you will depart from Bucharest and enjoy the same inclusions as in the other 2-days itinerary: transfers, accommodation, dinner and breakfast and access to the party. The price for this tour is €369 or €399 if you want to accommodate in a single room.
Prices for 1-Day City Breaks
Our 1-Day City Breaks include accommodation, meals and access to one of our Halloween Parties. These itineraries do not include transfers, so you will have to arrive in Sighisoara or Bran on your own.
For the Sighisoara Citadel Halloween City Break, you will have to pay €249. Meanwhile, the same itinerary focused on the Halloween Party at Bran Castle costs €259 or €288 for single rooms.
Food and Transportation Costs in Romania
Before we talk specifics, you should already know that our tours include transfers between attractions (car, minibus or coach depending on group size). We also include meals (usually a dinner and a breakfast every day). This means that – unless you decide to wander off on your own – you won’t have to worry about food and transfers in our country.
Still, if you decide to have lunch on your own terms or if you wish to extend your stay and explore on your own, you should at least have a general idea of the prices in Romania.
Budget Your Trip is a very useful website for people who are planning their budget. According to them, travelers spend – on average – 104 lei/day on food in Romania (this is calculated based on three meals/day). Costs can differ based on your menu and the restaurant of your choice.
For transportation, the same site reveals that travelers spend about 79 lei/person in Romania. Take into account that the exact amount depends on how much you use public transportation and whether you travel by bus or taxi. If you have to reach a lot of places, you might be better off renting a car and driving yourself.
While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.
Transportation between cities and towns in Romania costs an average of lei128. Naturally, prices vary by the length of the route, the type of transportation used, and the date.
